In the relatively short period of time that Hydrospace has taken up shop in the aquarium/aquaculture industries, they’ve made a sizable impact on how microbial products are produced and marketed. Much of that is certainly due to their transparency; they clearly list the major species in their products and even demonstrate how they are produced. Moreover, they go to great lengths to explain how these microbes ‘work’ in layman’s terms (even while citing peer-reviewed literature to support their claims). And, perhaps most importantly, they maintain a focus on species that occur naturally in the habitats we strive so hard to replicate.

Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that Hydrospace would celebrate crossing that “five-year mark” threshold (a significant milestone for any small family-owned business) with the introduction of new species and a fresh approach to how aquarists are educated in aquarium microbiology–about bacteria generally and about purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) specifically.

The most exciting of these changes are upgrades to their revolutionary live product PNS ProBio (affectionately known as “the red bottle”). While PNS ProBio once contained a single PNSB (Rhodopseudomonas), it now contains three (Rhodopseudomonas, Rhodospirillum, and Rhodobacter).

Additionally, Hydrospace has just released a completely new product, PNS Deep Cycle, which is like no other. Formulated with a functional community of anaerobic bacteria collected by Hydrospace themselves from a wild coral reef, PNS Deep Cycle contains proven beneficial bacteria, including Rhodovolum, Marichromatium, and Prosthecochloris.

To boot, all of this comes with substantial improvements to packaging. And it’s not just a nicer look; these shelf space-saving (tall, slender) recyclable HDPE bottles are sturdier and have easy-to-read gradation marks to facilitate dosage. Each label features a QR code that links to key product information on Hydrospace’s updated website.

It’s understandable why Hydrospace has remained relatively unchanged since its founding in 2019, as it has consistently been held in high regard by hobbyists and industry players alike. So, although we don’t necessarily expect to see another shake-up of this magnitude from this manufacturer for quite a while, we’re sure that this latest round of improvements will keep aquarists talking for a very long time!
