After introducing the front-end challenges of a stunning 6,000-gallon reef aquarium in a private Atlanta home in the first video installment, the team at Reef Aquaria Design (RAD) returns to showcase the life support and other systems that keep this reef aquarium growing and thriving.

A large-scale reef aquarium requires an expansive array of equipment to run successfully, and routine maintenance of these life support systems is critical.
A large-scale reef aquarium requires an expansive array of equipment to run successfully, and routine maintenance of these life support systems is critical.

RAD’s Giovany Cardo travels to Atlanta monthly to run through an entire systems check; calibrating pH probes, replacing reagents in the Neptune Systems Trident, replacing the Chemi-Pur Blue chemical filtration media that’s housed in a Deltec media reactor, cleaning all the equipment, and numerous other tasks.

Giovany Cardo stresses the importance of a checklist to ensure nothing gets overlooked; a big reef aquarium means a big checklist! Routine maintenance is essential to warding off problems on any reef aquarium; shown here, the step-by-step process of replacing reagents in a Neptune System's Trident, which monitors alkalinity, calcium and magnesium levels.

You’ll also get a glimpse at what goes into feeding this massive reef aquarium, whose inhabitants consume approximately a pound of food per day!

Giovany Cardo gives viewers a look inside the liquid feed refrigerator. A series of Neptune Systems DOS pumps continuously supply Reef Nutrition planktonic feeds to maintain the aquariums massive population of corals.

Pay close attention to some of the details revealed in this video; there are a couple of very interesting ideas from the professionals at RAD that would be great to implement in your own home filter room, particularly if you’re not in the position to hire a team of professionals to install a “blue whale” of a reef aquarium in your own home!
