Not far off the coast of Northeast Australia lies Magnetic island, whose reefs support at least 100 species of coral. Each year in July, extreme low tides expose the inshore shallow reefs for several hours, causing coral species that are intertidal specialists to endure several hours of exposure to direct tropical sun.
Coral scientist Russell Kelley examines this habitat in his latest installment of the Coral Explorer column in the January/February 2023 issue of CORAL Magazine and shares this video from the shores of Magnetic Island.
