Applications for MASNA’s 2020–2021 Student Scholarships are due on June 5, 2020.

To further our goals, MASNA offers the MASNA Student Scholarship program to help stimulate and promote the pursuit of marine science, in particular for topics that are current and relevant to the marine aquarium hobby.

This year there are two scholarships available: one $4,000 scholarship for a college undergraduate student (incoming and current undergraduate students), and one $4,000 scholarship for a college graduate student (incoming and current graduate students).

The 2020–2021 MASNA Student scholarships are made possible by our generous sponsors LiveAquaria, EcoTech Marine, and Two Little Fishies.

This is the 12th year for the MASNA Student Scholarship Program. In total, the MASNA Student Scholarship program has contributed $72,000 to college students who have significantly impacted the marine aquarium hobby.

Scholar Spotlight:

2019 Undergraduate Scholarship recipient Lauren Block.

2019 Undergraduate Scholarship recipient Lauren Block.

Last year, our undergraduate scholarship was awarded to Lauren Block, a promising and bright student who will undoubtedly become a valuable asset and a strong advocate for our shared hobby. Here is what she has been up to in the last year:

Since attending MACNA 2019, Lauren has been finishing up her second to last semester at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She is working on a research project to optimize the rearing of larval clownfish in co-culture with copepods, for which she received funding through the UHM Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and Douglas S. Yamamura Scholarship.

She will continue this research project through the summer. This past spring, she was given the opportunity give a talk about her project at the World Aquaculture Society Aquaculture America conference in Honolulu, which was made possible through connections she made at MACNA. Following her graduation, Lauren is planning to attend graduate school, and she hopes to pursue an academic career in zooplankton and larval fish ecology. Reflecting on the months since MACNA, she is incredibly grateful for the doors the MASNA scholarship program opened for her, which are helping to establish her future career.

The 2020–2021 MASNA Student Scholarships will be publicly awarded to the recipients at the 32nd annual Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA) in Phoenix, Arizona, from August 28–30, 2020. Funding is available to assist each recipient in attending MACNA.

If the applicants have any questions, they can refer to the FAQ section of the MASNA Scholarship webpage. If the applicants cannot find the answers they are seeking there, they can direct their questions about the MASNA Student Scholarships to the scholarship committee chair at Scholarship@MASNA.org.

The deadline for submission is June 5, 2020, by midnight of the submitting applicant’s time zone.
