It’s been several long years since the last Tridacna gigas was available for sale in the US. Rampant overfishing for the international food industry has made this clam a rare species to encounter in the wild.
Tridacna gigas is truly the Giant Clam of legend. This species grows rapidly to over 4 feet in length and has been recorded to weigh more than 700 lbs! They are typically found in shallow lagoons and reef flats up to a depth of 60 feet. As juveniles, they will attach to the substrate using their byssal organ which secretes sticky threads. In time this organ atrophies and the large size of the animal helps keeps it in place.
ORA is now extremely excited to offer the aquatic community 100% aquacultured Tridacna gigas clams, while also working to restore native populations in the waters around our clam farm, MIMF (Marshall Islands Mariculture Facility). ORA sells juveniles of this species, which are a golden color highlighted by teal and blue spots on the mantle.
These clams are shipping this week to local fish stores EVERYWHERE! Call your store today and be one of the very first in YEARS to have a truly GIANT CLAM in your home aquarium!
