It’s that time of year again! Don’t miss the 9th annual Marine Breeding Initiative Workshop, July 21, 2018, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

The Marine Breeding Initiative (MBI) was created in 2008 as a way for interested hobbyists, breeders, institutions, and scientists to find and share captive breeding information. The mission of the MBI is to gather captive breeding information and share it openly with everyone.

Since 2010, the MBI has been bringing members of the captive breeding community together for a weekend of presentations and networking at the Annual MBI Workshop. This is an event unlike any other, as it focuses only on captive breeding.

Each year, the Workshop hosts speakers who share their perspective with interested hobbyists, industry members, and scientists on everything from the basics of captive breeding to the most recent and cutting-edge developments. This all takes place in a more intimate setting than larger events.

Enjoy Three Days of Marine Fish & Invert Breeding Activities

Following tradition, the Workshop begins on Friday evening, July 20th, 2018, with an informal hotel reception, where attendees get a chance to mingle with other hobbyists and the speakers.

Everything gets underway on Saturday morning, July 21st, 2018, at the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, MI. This is a full day of speakers, included lunch, and an awesome raffle!

On Sunday, July 22nd, 2018, there is a BBQ hosted by Fishtal Propagations, where participants can relax on the shore of Elizabeth Lake, enjoy some yummy food, and chat with everyone in an informal setting. This is a great time to ask those questions you’ve always wanted to know an answer to.

2018 MBI Workshop Speakers

The 2018 MBI Workshop, the ninth year of this event, will include presentations on Saturday by Matthew Carberry from Sustainable Aquatics, Colby Johnson of Pacific Island Aquatics, Dan Underwood from Seahorse Source, Vince Vacco from Mystic Aquarium, and Ramon Villaverde from the Columbus Zoo.

The Workshop Is Growing

This year, there have been a few new additions to the growing Workshop schedule. Seahorse enthusiasts will be delighted by two sessions with Kelly Delavergne and Dan Underwood. One is on Saturday evening after dinner, and the other is at noon Sunday before the BBQ kicks off. There will also be a special “Scientific Session for the Home Breeder” with Tamara Marshall from 10 am until noon at the hotel. This is an add-on event that requires a separate ticket, and there are only a few seats left.

Anyone interested in captive breeding should seriously consider attending the Workshop this year. No matter what level of interest you may have, you’re sure to learn something while meeting some great people at the same time. Attendees from years past often comment on how they were inspired and returned home to start new projects.
