African Angelfish, Holacanthus africanus, a rarity from West Africa, is reaching the US aquarium trade.

Quality Marine in Los Angeles is letting its dealer network and angelfish enthusiasts know that they have started receiving a rare import very seldom seen in North American aquariums:

“These fish came from a QM exclusive partner collector in West Africa.  It has been some time since we’ve had fish from this region due to many factors.  Things like political instability, poor area infrastructure and infrequent & irregularly available air travel to and from these nations has traditionally made trying to source aquatic livestock from this area extremely risky for both fish and people.

This subadult African Angelfish still shows traces of the blue juvenile coloration, which disappears with age.

“Recently, we have found safe, reliable pathways for our collectors there to be able to export a quality, sustainable product and we are happy to be offering our customers some of the area’s more unique specimens, albeit in limited quantity.”
