Position: Rising Tide Conservation in collaboration with the Oceanic Institute (OI) is seeking highly motivated applicants for a 1 year research internship position in the rearing of marine ornamental fish at the Oceanic Institute, Waimanalo HI 96795. Through a local partnership, eggs are collected from marine reef species and transported back to OI for rearing research trials in our hatchery. There is flexibility on the start date, but the program must begin before February 1, 2016 and requires a 1 year commitment.
Duties: The selected applicant will be the primary point of contact with aquarium staff and will be responsible for retrieving eggs from when available (must have own transportation). The incumbent will set up larval rearing tanks for rearing the eggs, assist with live feeds production, care for the daily needs of the fish larvae (feeding, tank maintenance, water quality etc.) assist with data collection and maintenance of hatchery systems and be primarily responsible for documentation of the methods that lead to the successful culture of selected species. This person will be responsible for monthly Rising Tide updates for the Facebook page and presentations and publication of significant advances accomplished in this role. This position includes working alongside other OI hatchery staff and functioning as part of the greater team to collectively accomplish the above duties. Hours are at least 40 hours/week and weekend and holiday duties should be expected.
Qualifications:
- Experience with marine fish is a strong plus.
- Applicants must be fit and able to lift 50 pounds.
- Minimum of 18 years of age and engaged in or recently completed undergraduate studies
- A background or degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology or a related field
- Evidence of valid current health insurance and a valid driver’s license
- Able to work well with others and/or with limited supervision
- Able and willing to work flexible hours for a minimum 40 hours/week including weekends and some holidays
Pay: $30,000 annual stipend. This does not included benefits, insurance, living expenses, housing, or relocation costs. Applicants must furnish evidence of insurance and a valid driver’s license. Position requires a vehicle for transportation. The selected applicant will have “visiting researcher” status at HPU.
