Our friends at Reef Patrol have done it again, presenting an exciting story that merges the human need for electricity on the remote volcanic islands of French Polynesia while looking to the vast near-shore lagoons and asking, “Is there is a way to use this space while benefiting the coral reefs that are under siege?”
From the Video Description:
“As coral reefs in French Polynesia face accelerating bleaching from rising ocean temperatures, this project explores an innovative climate-adaptation solution: floating solar platforms designed to shade vulnerable reef areas during extreme heat events.
“By reducing direct solar radiation while simultaneously generating renewable energy, the system aims to create temporary “climate shelters” that buy corals critical time to survive marine heatwaves.
“The film follows scientists, engineers, and local communities testing whether technology can support nature without replacing it — asking a bold question: can we engineer protection fast enough to save the reefs?
