Earlier this year, we shared that Florida-based Surge Marine Life had successfully produced the world’s first captive-bred Rose Anthias, Odontanthias katayamai. These rare, deepwater anthias are known for their unique ability to fluoresce, adding to their gorgeous aesthetic.

Now, after only a few months, the first juveniles are being offered direct to the aquarist at a size of 1.5 inches (3.8 cm)! From the Surge Marine Life Facebook post: “112 days old, about 1.5” long. Eating pellets, disease-free, and ready to ship straight to your door. One of the rarest fish in captivity, now available captive bred at surgemarinelife.com.

No word on how many are available, or how quickly they’re selling, but you can see the listing directly at https://surgemarinelife.com/products/captive-bred-rose-anthias – considering that single wild-collected specimens retail for $17,000-$20,000, and pairs up to $40,000, the current introductory pricing of $5,999 definitely supports the notion that aquaculture can make rare fish more accessible and affordable! Yes…that is still all “relative” of course!
